🔧 Core setup: Enable Account Updater
Navigate to payment settings
Log in to your Recurly admin and go to Configuration → Payment Settings. Scroll to the Account Updater (AU) section and click the toggle to open the configuration modal.
Select MasterCard MCC
In the "Card brand configuration" box, use the search field under MasterCard to select your Merchant Category Code (MCC). This is required for MasterCard updates.
Enter American Express (AMEX) SE
Input your 10-digit Service Establishment (SE) number in the American Express field. This enables direct communication with the American Express (AMEX) network.
Accept disclosure and confirm
Check the box to agree to the terms in the modal. Note: Account Updater (AU) is a best-effort proactive measure; it does not guarantee an update for every card event. If you have questions on pricing, please contact Recurly Support.
Save and confirm
Once you click "Enable," your status will update. Recurly immediately begins scanning for card updates within your stored payment methods.
Activation window: While the toggle is instant, card networks typically take 24–48 hours to complete the initial batch sync. Real-Time Account Updater (RTAU) will be active for your very next transaction attempt.

Expert tip
Account Updater (AU) is a powerful assistant that works most effectively alongside a strong dunning strategy. Always monitor your "Expired" decline codes in analytics to ensure dunning is correctly picking up cards that AU cannot resolve. For more help, see the Recurly Docs.
