Chargeback management for cards

Manage card chargebacks in Recurly — automatically create refund invoices, expire subscriptions, and configure gateway-specific chargeback webhooks for Adyen, Chase Orbital, and Stripe.

Early Access Chargeback management for cards is available in early access. Contact Recurly Support or your account manager to enable this feature.
Recurly's chargeback management automates the response to card chargebacks — creating external refund invoices and expiring subscriptions when a chargeback reaches a final state (accepted, lost, or expired). Currently available on Adyen, Chase Orbital, and Stripe.

Definition

Recurly chargeback management handles the automated processing of card chargebacks. When a chargeback reaches a final state — accepted, lost, or expired — Recurly receives a Chargeback Completed event from the gateway, creates an external refund invoice and a chargeback transaction, and expires the associated subscription.

Supported gateways

  • Adyen
  • Chase Orbital
  • Stripe

Additional gateways will be supported in the future.

Recurly chargeback process

1

Customer issues a chargeback

The customer disputes a charge with their issuing bank. The merchant can dispute or accept the chargeback through their gateway.

2

Recurly receives the final chargeback state

When the chargeback reaches a final state (lost or accepted), Recurly receives a Chargeback Completed event from the gateway.

3

Recurly creates a refund invoice and chargeback transaction

Recurly creates an external refund invoice and a corresponding chargeback transaction on the account.

4

Recurly expires the subscription

Recurly expires the customer's subscription. Where supported by the gateway, subscription expiration occurs only for fraud and service chargebacks.

Note Recurly does not process chargeback reversals.

How to enable

1

Request the feature

Contact Recurly Support or your account manager to enable chargeback management for your account.

2

Configure the chargeback setting

On the Invoice Settings page, select Create a refund transaction when a chargeback is received (default).

3

Optionally enable auto-expiry

Select the option to automatically expire subscriptions when a chargeback is received.

Gateway-specific setup

Adyen

1

Enable Adyen webhooks in Recurly

Follow the Adyen notifications configuration guide and enable the following webhook types: CHARGEBACK, SECOND_CHARGEBACK, DISPUTE_DEFENSE_PERIOD_ENDED.

2

Enable the CHARGEBACK_REVERSED webhook event

Enable the originalReference for CHARGEBACK_REVERSED events in Adyen. See Adyen dispute notification setup.

3

Manage disputes in Adyen

Certain webhook statuses require action in the Adyen Dashboard to trigger. For example, to receive a webhook with disputeStatus: "Accepted", you must accept the chargeback in your Adyen Dashboard. See managing Adyen disputes.

Chase Orbital

To enable chargeback management with Chase Orbital, you need to grant Recurly access to Chase chargeback file reports. Contact your Chase representative — they will set up access using Recurly's Partner ID to allow file downloads. No setup is required within Recurly for this process.
