# Key details

## Default vs. alternate templates

Every Recurly site has one **default template**, pre-configured with your company information from Site Settings. It's automatically applied to all accounts unless an alternate template is assigned.

**Alternate templates** are additional templates you create to serve different business entities, customer segments, or billing scenarios. You can create up to ten alternate templates. Once multiple templates exist, any one of them can be set as the site default.

## What you can customize per template

Each invoice template supports the following customizations:

* **Header image** — Your company logo or any brand image. Accepted formats: PNG, JPG, or GIF. Maximum size: 256 KB.
* **Footer image** — A secondary image for branding, legal disclaimers, or additional information. Same format and size limits as the header.
* **Merchant business address** — Override the company address displayed on invoices from this template. This is for display purposes only — tax calculations always use the address in Site Settings.
* **Hide line item dates** — Remove dates from line items for a cleaner invoice layout.
* **Hide zero-charge line items** — Suppress $0.00 line items to keep invoices focused on billable activity.

## Template assignment

Alternate templates can be assigned to individual accounts via the Admin Console or the API. You can assign a template, change the assigned template, or revert an account to the default at any time.

For any account, you can view which template is currently assigned. Through the API, you can also retrieve a list of all accounts assigned to a specific template — useful for auditing at scale.

NoteAssigning or changing a template only affects invoices generated after the assignment. Existing invoices on the account are not updated and remain as-is for auditing purposes.

## API support

Template configuration and setup must be done in the Admin Console — it's not available via the API. However, template assignment and reassignment are fully supported in both the v2 and v3 API.
