Recurly

Adjustments: Charges & Credits

The history of your customer's Recurly account can be tracked through adjustments, made up of credits and charges.

Charges

Whenever a customer is billed, a charge is recorded for the service period. Charges can also be used to collect a one-off payment (like professional services rendered) from your customers. Unlike transactions, charges are not immediately invoiced. When a subscription renews, Recurly will automatically invoice for any non-invoiced charges on the account. Alternatively, you may collect any outstanding charges on an account by posting an invoice.

Credits

The opposite of charges, credits are used to indicate a return of funds to a customer. Unlike a refund, the credit remains on the customer’s account as a negative balance and will be subtracted from future invoices until satisfied.

Subscription Proration

When a subscription is changed with a timeframe of immediately, Recurly looks at the amount the customer originally paid, the amount of the new subscription, and the length of time spent in the customer’s current bill cycle. Based on these calculations, the customer will be either charged for subscription upgrade, or credited for a subscription downgrade. Subscriptions that are changed with a timeframe of at renewal are not prorated.

Charging an Account

On a customer’s account, click the Charge Account button to create a charge amount and (optional) description and accounting code. Once created, the charge will place a balance on the account. Click Invoice Now and then Post Invoice to create an invoice and tell Recurly to collect payment immediately. Uninvoiced charges are automatically rolled into the customer’s next subscription renewal invoice.

Crediting an Account

On a customer’s account, click the Credit Account button to create a credit amount and (optional) description and accounting code. Once created, this credit will place a negative balance on the account. Any future invoices will be reduced by this credit balance until fully satisfied.
